Description

Rwanda’s Eastern Province contains the largest area of agricultural land, but it is highly vulnerable to increasing drought. Smallholder farmers depend exclusively on rainfall, changes to weather seasonality - including shorter and more intense rainy seasons. This has led to crop failure, food shortages and famine.

This project restores ecosystems and transform fragile landscapes in Rwanda’s Eastern province which have been degraded and are unable to sustain livelihoods in the face of climate change. This is achieved through building community reliance to enhance livelihoods, food and water security of the most vulnerable rural population.

The project focuses on the Eastern Province, which is the most vulnerable and drought exposed region of Rwanda. The province covers seven districts namely: Bugesera, Rwamagana, Ngoma, Kirehe, Kayonza, Gatsibo and Nyagatare.
