Dr Abiar Rahman is the Country Coordinator and Liaison Scientist for CIFOR-ICRAF in Bangladesh, where he leads agroforestry research and coordinates activities with national and international partners. He is also a professor in the Department of Agroforestry and Environment at Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU), Bangladesh. With over 25 years of experience in agriculture, multi-storey agroforestry, agrometeorology, forest management and sustainable land-use design, he brings extensive expertise to both research and development sectors. Since joining CIFOR-ICRAF in April 2019, Dr Rahman has spearheaded initiatives in agroforestry, community development and climate-resilient agriculture. His work includes designing homestead production systems to improve livelihoods, food security and income, especially in drought- and saline-prone areas. He is actively involved in examining the impacts of land use and climate change on ecosystem services across Bangladesh.He earned his PhD from Kyushu University, Japan in 2008, and holds an MSc in agroforestry environment. He has supervised around 40 postgraduate students, authored or co-authored over 85 publications, and participated in 36 international conferences and workshops. He has implemented several donor-funded projects and published two books: Deforestation in the Teknaf Peninsula of Bangladesh: A Study of Political Ecology, and Statistical Methods of Agricultural Research.
